The Planning commission here approved a conditional use permit for Zaxby’s restaurant to go in the northwest quadrant at White Oak.
Zaxby’s will join Panera Bread and Red Robin as the three restaurants slated to go in that quadrant, which will be across Jones Sausage Road from Cabela’s and facing U.S. 70. Both Red Robin and Panera Bread have started construction.
The building will be over 3,800 square feet with 90 seats. It is the standard Zaxby’s size, said Keith Roberts, a site engineer for the Timmons Group, who requested the permit
Most of the concerns from planning commission members stemmed from the layout for parking. The design proposes the restaurant to have its own lot and drive-thru lane.
“It just seems jammed up to have parking outside the perimeter of the Zaxby’s site,” commission member Jeff Swain said during the site plan’s review.
Zaxby’s is a franchised chain of fast casual restaurants, known for its chicken. The first restaurant opened in 1990 in Georgia and made its way to North Carolina in 1998.
The restaurant offers chicken wings, chicken fingers, sandwiches, french fries and salads.
Zaxby’s now operates in 15 states across the country. It has more than 600 locations. This will be the second location in Garner. The other one is on U.S. 401 Highway and is owned by a different franchisee.
The plan will go before the town council on Feb. 1.
Landing at Heather Park
The planning commission also approved a special use permit for an 80-unit townhouse project on Heather Park Drive. The site is west of Heather Park Apartments.
It will be on a little more than 10 acres of land. The units will range between 22 and 26 feet wide, Stephanie Norris, an engineer representing the developer, said.
The townhomes will be two stories, have a garage, back patio and porch. There will be two parking spaces per unit including the garage. Additional parking is expected to be distributed throughout the site.
The neighborhood will have a central gathering place and a walking trail. There will be sidewalks along Heather Park Drive.
