Cans for a Cure
Vandora Springs Elementary will host the Cans for a Cure aluminum can recycling project throughout the summer months at 1300 Vandora Springs Road, Garner. Everyone is invited to recycle aluminum cans at the school in the blue recycling dumpster. All proceeds will benefit the Relay for Life of Garner. For more information email email@example.com.
The Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield will hold four free programs to help high school students prepare for the SAT and ACT college admissions tests, and write their application essay. The library is located at 305 E. Market St., Smithfield. • Saturday, Sept. 20: an SAT Challenge test will be held at 10 a.m., and an ACT Challenge test will be held at noon. The 10-question challenges are designed to help students get ready with sample test questions, test timing and pacing and score raising strategies.
• 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25: The combination SAT/ACT practice test will begin at 9:30 a.m. Students must arrive by 9 a.m. The test will help students get a feel for the questions and experience exam-like conditions.
The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive from 3 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, at St. Mary’s Church, 1008 Vandora Springs Road, Garner. Call 919-773-0867 for an appointment. Walk-ins are also welcome.

National Recovery Month
Johnston County Mental Health Center will host a celebration of National Recovery Month from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at First Missionary Baptist Church, 403 Caswell St., Smithfield. Aversboro Run Club
Aversboro Run Club meets at 6 p.m. every Thursday outside Aversboro Restaurant & Sports Bar, 1411 Aversboro Road, Garner. The club is open to every runner and walker, and runs set routes of 3, 4 and 5 miles covering many paces. The restaurant offers food and drink specials to all walkers and runners upon return.

Partnership for Children of Johnston County offers two programs for parents with young children.• Motheread is a 12-week self-paced program that combines the teaching of literacy skills with child development and family empowerment issues.
• The Incredible Years parent program offers weekly group sessions for 14 to 16 weeks. Participants practice skills to promote children’s academic, social and emotional skills.
