Veterans Advisory Board
The town of Garner is seeking applicants for a new Veterans Advisory Board. The board will be composed of seven at-large members, at least four of whom will be honorably discharged veterans. This board may make recommendations concerning issues related to town policies that affect veterans and will operate as a link between Garner residents and town officials to explore ways to honor and recognize the service of area veterans. Veterans Day celebration
The town of Garner and the Garner Veterans Memorial Committee will honor veterans at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11, at Aversboro Road Baptist Church, 1600 Aversboro Road. The event will include a concert by the Garner Magnet High School band, followed at 11 a.m. by a program featuring Under Secretary for Memorial Affairs Steve L. Muro as guest speaker. Music association meeting

Wake County will kick off weekly drop-in flu vaccination clinics from 3-7 p.m. on Thursdays beginning Nov. 14 at the Southern Regional Center, 130 N. Judd Parkway, Fuquay-Varina. Googling your family tree
A family history class, “Googling Your Family Tree,” will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1443 Aversboro Road, Garner. Attendees will learn to use Google tools and advance search operators for effective genealogical searches to locate photos of their ancestors, access a virtual cart catalog of over 15 million books, or translate a document into English.
Optimist tree lot opening early
The Garner Optimist Christmas tree lot will open Nov. 19. The lot’s hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. week nights, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturdays and 1 to 8 p.m. Sundays. The lot is located at 2110 Vandora Springs Road, Garner.

Unified hazard plan
For the first time, Wake County will develop a multi-jurisdictional hazard mitigation plan for this year. Previously, each jurisdiction was responsible for developing its own plan. The general purposes of the plan are to protect life and property by reducing the potential for future damages and economic loss that come as a result of natural hazards. The public is invited to attend a project kickoff meeting from 10 a.m. until noon Thursday, Nov. 21, at the Wake County Office Building, 337 S. Salisbury St., Raleigh, in room G31.
Johnston County Festival of Trees
The 10th annual Festival of Trees, presented by Keep Johnston County Beautiful, Inc., will open to the public at 9 a.m. Friday, Dec. 6, at the Johnston Medical Mall on Brightleaf Boulevard in Smithfield. The event will run until noon Saturday, Dec. 14. The festival is a display of 55 decorated live Christmas trees sponsored by various businesses in the county. Live performances for visitors by school and church choirs, soloists, and other music and dance groups are scheduled throughout the festival. Other attractions include a cookie baking contest at 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9, and a Christmas tree raffle valued at $1,000 set to take place Saturday, Dec. 14.
