Veteran theatrical touring company The Nebraska Theatre Caravan will bring long-running musical “The Fantastics” to the Paul A. Johnston Auditorium March 9.
Written by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt, the musical tells the story of young lovers becoming disillusioned with their relationship, only to discover the true depth of love. Running from May 3, 1960 to Jan. 13, 2002, the world’s longest-running musical was revived in 2006 in the Snapple Theatre Center in Times Square.
Now, director Carl Beck, costume designer Georgiann Regan and scenic designer Jim Othuse bring a steam punk adaptation of the classic musical.
“It’s not an intrusive concept,” Beck said. “It seems like the allegoric-quality can blend with the fantasy, giving it a quasi-period feel and making for a stronger statement than [The Fantasticks] usually gets." He added that the story is not being re-written or changed in any way. Outside of the costumes, set and props, this show is, in its entirety, the original. "It's classical simplicity. It's not a contemporary character tale. It's about a boy who is overly in love with a girl whose fathers are trying to keep them together by pulling them apart," Beck said. "Steampunk seems to lend itself to this story by finding beauty among the broken pieces."
The show will start at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 9, at the Paul A. Johnston Auditorium, 245 College Road, Smithfield. Tickets are available at 919-209-2099 or www.JCCPerformingArts.com. Admission is $15 for adults, $12.50 for seniors, students, and military, and $17.50 at the door.
