Relay for Life events• Garner United Methodist Church will host a barbecue chicken dinner from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 21, at 201 Methodist Drive, Garner, to benefit the Relay for Life. • Team James first annual Relay Craft and Vendor fundraiser will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 22, at Heather Hills Clubhouse, 901 Claymore Drive, Garner. Vendors and crafters will be present, and a raffle will be held.
Career and college expo
A career and college expo will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 17, in the Paul A. Johnston Auditorium on JCC main campus in Smithfield. Democratic Women meet
The Democratic Women will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 20, in the fellowship hall of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 218 S. Second St., Smithfield. Amanda Underwood, a blogger and technical support specialist for PoliticsNC, will speak.
BET stars at GPAC
BET stars Shang Forbes and Aaliyah Ford will be at the Paul A. Johnston Auditorium for a comedy performance at 7 p.m. Friday, March 28, at 269 College Road, Smithfield. Tickets are $8 and are available at 919-209-2099 or online at jccperformingarts.com. Tickets are $8. All Johnston Community College students, faculty, and staff will receive one free ticket. This PG-13 performance is sponsored by the JCC Student Government Association.
Barbecue plate sale
McCullers Ruritan Club will hold a barbecue plate sale from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, March 28, at 8116 Ten Ten Road, Raleigh. Eat-in or takeout. Tickets are $8.
Jazz and brunch
Serve the Need of Johnston County (STN) and the Johnston County Alumni Chapter of N.C. Central University will co-host a Jazz Brunch fundraiser from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 29, at the American Legion Post 71 at 1300 Old U.S. 70 West, Clayton. The event will feature the NCCU Jazz Ensemble performing. Tickets are $25 and can be obtained by calling 919-585-2934.

Free tax preparation
The AARP Tax Aide program will assist taxpayers in electronically filing their federal and N.C. state tax returns from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and noon to 4 p.m. Thursdays at the Avery Street Annex, 201 Avery St., Garner. No appointments are necessary. Taxpayers and spouses, if filing jointly, must have picture IDs and Social Security cards for themselves and all dependents. If married, both taxpayers must be present. For a refund to be credited to a checking account, they must have a blank check, not a deposit slip. Taxpayers will need records of all income and expenses.

Partnership for Children of Johnston County offers two programs for parents with young children.• Motheread is a 12-week self-paced program that combines the teaching of literacy skills with child development and family empowerment issues.
• The Incredible Years parent program offers weekly group sessions for 14 to 16 weeks. Participants practice skills to promote children’s academic, social and emotional skills.
