Memorial Day in Garner has a new backdrop.
Garner will host its annual celebration of veterans at its new Veterans Memorial, with Vietnam veteran and Garner Mayor Ronnie Williams delivering the keynote address at a ceremony to begin at 1:30 p.m.
It will be a similar hour-long program at Lake Benson Park, but this will be the first Memorial Day since the construction of the $500,000 memorial.
“I think the Memorial Day celebration will have more meaning this year,” Williams said.
Williams will also speak at the annual Memorial Day Service at 11:15 a.m. The service, organized by the Garner Post 10225 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, will be held at Montlawn Cemetery and Memorial Gardens at 2911 S. Wilmington ST. in Raleigh.
Honoring veterans has become a running theme, particularly this year for Garner. Not only was the memorial constructed, but its fundraising efforts proved central to the town’s efforts to become an All America City, a designation selectively handed out by the National Civic League since 1949. A delegation of roughly 40 will travel to Denver for the finals of that competition June 14-16 in Denver.
