The 82nd Airborne Division All American Chorus has been added to this year’s Garner’s Veterans Memorial Salute to the Troops.
The a cappella chorus is comprised of members of the 82nd, which is stationed at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville. All of the singers are active duty personnel with military responsibilities. They sing a wide variety of songs.
The perform in uniform and display military precision in movement and cadence.
The second annual Salute to the Troops will be held on Sunday, May 17 at 6 p.m. at Aversboro Road Baptist Church with a wreath ceremony at the Garner Veterans Memorial at Lake Benson Park immediately after the program.
“We are thrilled to have the 82nd chorus join us,” said Faye Gardner, one of the leaders in establishing the Veterans Memorial and a Salute to the Troops organizer. “The chorus is outstanding. Having them here adds to a program that already was excellent. I can’t wait.”
The 82nd is joining a program that includes a community choir and orchestra that is being assembled especially for the event. Garner policemen and firemen will present the colors and there also will be a special recognition for current military personnel.
Beth Hunnicutt, the worship leader at Garner First Baptist, and Doug Pedigo, the music minister at Aversboro Road, are leading the community orchestra and choir.
Singers and musicians can participate in the event by contacting the Garner First Baptist office at 919-772-1772. There will be two rehearsals.
The Salute to the Troops also is assembling a list of active duty military personnel from the community. They will be recognized during the event and in the future.
“We want our entire community to show our military personnel how much we appreciate them defending our freedoms,” Pedigo said. “It will be a time to celebrate the sacrifices that have been made for us.”
This is the second annual Salute to the Troops. There is no admission charge. The event is produced by Show N Tell, a local 501-C-3 organization. Show N Tell recently presented War At Your Door, a musical drama about events in the community on April 12, 1865.
