A five-part financial workshop will be offered from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesdays beginning May 6 and concluding June 3 at the Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield, 305 E. Market St., Smithfield. Jayne McBurney of Johnston Cooperative Extension will lead the workshop and cover topics including budgeting, understanding credit and planning for the future. Friday Family Flicks
“Monsters University” will be shown on a 30-foot outdoor movie screen at 8 p.m. Friday, May 8, Lake Benson Park, Garner. Bring blankets and chairs and enjoy an outdoor movie under the stars. Refreshments will be sold but coolers are welcome. The movie is free. For those interested in spending the night at Lake Benson Park, bring tents and camping gear. The fee is $12 per family for residents and $15 per family for nonresidents. Families must register in advance. Families may arrive as early as 6 p.m. to set up their campsites. Free document shredding event
A secure document shredding event will be held from 9 a.m. until noon Saturday, May 9, at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 2100 Buffaloe Rd., Garner. Plant and Garden Gear sale
A sale featuring plants propagated by Johnston County Extension Master Gardener members, will run from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 16 at the Johnston County Agriculture Center, 2736 NC 210 Highway, Smithfield. In addition, new gardening gloves and gently used gardening books, tools, pots and more will be for sale. Proceeds fund Master Gardener outreach programs in Johnston County. Teen volunteers needed
The Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield, located at 305 E. Market St. in Smithfield, seeks new teen volunteers to assist with the Summer Reading Program. Volunteers will assist with children’s summer programming, shelving books and keeping books in order. Volunteers must fill out an application and attend an orientation from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 13. Aversboro Run Club
Aversboro Run Club meets at 6 p.m. every Thursday outside Aversboro Restaurant & Sports Bar, 1411 Aversboro Road, Garner. The club is open to every runner and walker, and runs set routes of 3, 4 and 5 miles covering many paces. The restaurant offers food and drink specials to all walkers and runners upon their return.
Johnston County MS Support Group
The Johnston County MS Support Group meets at 11 a.m. on the third Thursday of the month at The Church at Clayton Crossings, 11407 US Hwy 70 W. Clayton. The group is open to those dealing with MS and their families and is free of charge.
Partnership for Children of Johnston County offers two programs for parents with young children.
Motheread is a 12-week self-paced program that combines the teaching of literacy skills with child development and family empowerment issues.
The Incredible Years parent program offers weekly group sessions for 14 to 16 weeks. Participants practice skills to promote children’s academic, social and emotional skills.
