West Johnston wins competition
The West Johnston High School Envirothon team, called the Edmundson Quadrangle ‘Quokkas’ placed first at the regional Area IV Envirothon and placed 2nd at the N.C. Envirothon Competition where they had the highest scores in Aquatics, Soils and the Oral Presentation Problem out of 47 teams across the state.
The Envirothon is the largest environmental science competition in North America where five-member teams complete training and testing in five subject areas: Soils, Aquatics, Forestry, Wildlife and Current Environmental Issues.
The students compete in their knowledge of natural resource management, identification and critical thinking skills relating to environmental concerns. As winners, the students are eligible for scholarships and cash prizes. The Envirothon is sponsored by the North Carolina Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts.
