In honor of National Recovery Month, an event is planned by various community partners to raise awareness about mental and substance abuse prevention, treatment and recovery support services in Johnston County. The free event is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, at the Johnston Medical Mall, 514 North Brightleaf Blvd., Smithfield. There will be food, vendors, speakers and activities.
Democratic women meeting
The Democratic Women of Johnston County will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, in the fellowship hall at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 218 Second St., Smithfield. Featured speakers are Cynthia Seale-Rivera, new director of Harbor, and Judge Addie H. Rawls, district court judge and pastor. Big Sweep/Litter Sweep
The Town of Garner is celebrating National Public Lands Day by holding its fall Big Sweep/Litter Sweep beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, at White Deer Park Nature Center, 2400 Aversboro Road. This annual project relies on volunteers to help pick up trash along Garner roadways and in town parks. Participants will receive breakfast and equipment (gloves, bags) On-site registration begins at 8:30 a.m. in the Nature Center. Coats family reunion and picnic
Descendants of Amos “Babe” and Lenora “Nora” Wood Coats will have a family reunion and old fashioned picnic, at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, at Clemmons Educational State Forest on Old Highway 70 about 1.3 miles west of Clayton. Anyone with historical information, articles, pictures, and other memorabilia are encouraged to bring them for display.
Garner artist’s exhibit
An art show of local talent will be presented by the Arts League of Garner from Sept. 28-Nov. 20, at the Garner Senior Center, 205 East Garner Road. Beautiful professional art works are available at amateur prices.
Garner Senior High 30-year reunion
The Garner Senior High Class of 1985 will hold its 30-year reunion Oct. 2-3. Class members and their families are invited to the Garner Trojans homecoming game at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, at Trojan Stadium, 2101 Spring Drive, Garner. General admission is $7 per person; a section of bleachers will be reserved for the Class of 1985. The Garner Optimist Club is hosting its 17th annual golf tournament on Sunday, October 4, at Reedy Creek Golf Course. Tee time is 1 p.m. Format is super ball/captain’s choice four-man teams. Taking Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) Chapter 0678 meets from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Mondays at The Garner Senior Center, 205 E. Garner Road, Garner. The purpose of the group is to provide support, share information about healthy living and celebrate success with weight loss. Participants must pay $32 for yearly national dues and $3 monthly local dues.

Johnston County MS Support Group
The Johnston County MS Support Group meets at 11 a.m. on the third Thursday of the month at The Church at Clayton Crossings, 11407 US Hwy 70 W. Clayton. The group is open to those dealing with MS and their families and is free of charge.
Partnership for Children of Johnston County offers two programs for parents with young children.
Motheread is a 12-week self-paced program that combines the teaching of literacy skills with child development and family empowerment issues.
The Incredible Years parent program offers weekly group sessions for 14 to 16 weeks. Participants practice skills to promote children’s academic, social and emotional skills.
