Johnston County Chorale seeking voices
The Johnston County Chorale is inviting high school students and adults in Johnston and surrounding counties to participate in the chorale’s spring show. Registration is from 6:30 to 9 p.m. each Monday, Jan. 11-25, at First Baptist Church, 202 S. Fourth St., Smithfield. Auditions are not required, and members will perform in the chorale’s spring show, Best of Broadway, on May 7, at the Clayton Center in Clayton. Police open house
▪ A grand opening ceremony at the new Garner police station begins at noon on Jan. 15, at 912 7th Ave., Garner. The ceremony will begin on the front steps, then move to the unveiling of the mural, and finally go inside for a light lunch and building tours.

▪ A community open house will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 16 to give residents the opportunity to visit their new police station. The open house will include building tours, a child ID station, K9 team demonstrations, a police car for kids to experience and other activities.
A special art exhibition, titled “Thou Art Black Church,” will be in the front lobby of Garner Performing Arts Center, from 1:30 to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday, Jan. 15-Feb. 29, at 742 W. Garner Road. It will feature the work of Willie Bigelow, Wendy Dickerson, Shawn Etheridge, Eric McRay, Jermaine Powell and LeGrant Taylor. There will be a meet-the-artists reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 17 before the annual MLK celebration. Both the reception and the MLK celebration are free.
6th Annual Cooks for Books
Join the Garner Educational Foundation at the 6th Annual Cooks for Books: Tailgate Edition, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, at Garner TV & Appliance. There will be a Super Chili Cook-Off, and Garner restaurants will be competing for the “Best of the Best” tailgate food. Master Gardener class
A 13-week Master Gardener course will be offered from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Thursdays, beginning Jan. 28. A course fee of $120 includes a training manual and name tag. Taking Watercolor Lightly
The Frank Creech Gallery presents “Taking Watercolor Lightly,” a collection of works by Jim Brown’s watercolor class, now through Feb. 14, on the Johnston Community College campus. This free event is sponsored by the Down to Earth Garden Club.
TOPS Chapter 0678
Taking Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) Chapter 0678 meets from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Mondays at The Garner Senior Center, 205 E. Garner Road, Garner. The purpose of the group is to provide support, share information about healthy living and celebrate success with weight loss. Participants must pay $32 for yearly national dues and $3 monthly local dues.
Johnston County MS Support Group
The Johnston County MS Support Group meets at 11 a.m. on the third Tuesday of the month at The Church at Clayton Crossings, 11407 U.S. 70 W. Clayton. The group is open to those dealing with MS and their families and is free of charge.

Partnership for Children of Johnston County offers two programs for parents with young children.
Motheread is a 12-week self-paced program that combines the teaching of literacy skills with child development and family empowerment issues.
The Incredible Years parent program offers weekly group sessions for 14 to 16 weeks. Participants practice skills to promote children’s academic, social and emotional skills.
