Health department classes
The Johnston County Public Health Department hosts classes for residents this month and in June at 517 N. Bright Leaf Blvd., Smithfield.
Free smoking cessation classes start at 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 4. The series of classes is 9-10:30 a.m. May 4, 11, 18, 25 and 27, and June 1, 8 and 15. For details or to register, call 919-989-5200.
A parenting class for people with children 5 years old or younger starts at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 11. Registration is preferred (call to register), but walk-ins will be accepted. Childcare is available and snacks will be provided.

The 34th annual Garner Chamber of Commerce golf tournament starts with registration and lunch at 11:30 a.m., a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m. and dinner and awards at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 5, at River Ridge Golf Club, 3224 Auburn Knightdale Road, Raleigh. Registration is $100 at bit.ly/1oY0KG7.
Big Sweep/Litter Sweep
Garner’s annual Big Sweep/Litter Sweep will be on Saturday, May 7. Volunteers meet at 9 a.m. at the Holly Shelter at White Deer Park, 2400 Aversboro Road, for assignments and equipment. Breakfast and water are also provided.
Registration is encouraged, but it isn’t required. To sign up in advance, call White Deer Park Nature Center at 919-661-6982 or go to bit.ly/1M2QUOm. Registration the day of the event is at 8:30 a.m. at the Holly Shelter.
A coloring session for adults is 5-7 p.m. Monday, May 9, at Hocutt-Ellington Memorial Library, 100 S. Church St., Clayton. Bring your own coloring book or choose from provided pages.
The next sessions will be on Monday, May 23, and Monday, June 13, from 5-7 p.m. at the library. Registration is not required. All adults are welcome.
Clayton Road Race
The Clayton Road Race starts at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 14, downtown. Registration is $35 online through Wednesday, May 11. Registration is available for $40 the day of the race. For details, go to bit.ly/243Ku9J.
Classic Car Show
The annual Classic Car Show at Mount Zion United Methodist Church is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 14, at 15772 N.C. Highway 50 N., Garner.
Gates open at 9 a.m. Anyone with a classic, antique or muscle car is invited to show their car.
Canned goods and monetary donations will be accepted for the Smithfield Rescue Mission.
Garner accepts applications for nonprofit food vendors, community organizations and craft partners for Independence Day until Friday, May 20.

Garner Leadership Academy classes will be 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursdays, June 9 through July 21, at White Deer Park Nature Center, 2400 Aversboro Road. Registration for this 15-person class is required.
The class is designed for Garner residents developing skills as neighborhood or community leaders, and those who have been in leadership in homeowners associations, community groups or businesses.

“Cooking Camp: Chef in Training” for rising fifth- and sixth-graders is Monday, June 20, through Thursday, June 23, for $130. “Bad to the Bones: CSI Camp” for seventh- through ninth-grade students, which costs $85, will be on the same days.
“Create Art with Math!” for rising seventh- through ninth-grade students is Monday, June 27, through Thursday, June 30, for $100. “Future Entrepreneur” for ages 12-16 will be on the same days. This class on business skills, leadership, communication and etiquette is $50.

Garner High School class of 1967

Johnston County Amateur Radio
The Johnston County Amateur Radio Emergency Service is looking for licensed amateur radio operators interested in providing auxiliary communications in times of disaster. You do not have to be a resident of Johnston County to volunteer. ARES meets at 7 p.m. on the second Monday of each month at the American Red Cross office, 805-A South Third St., Smithfield. The town of Garner is seeking volunteers to serve on the Senior Citizens Advisory Committee, the Planning Commission and the Veterans Advisory Committee. TOPS Chapter 0678
Taking Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) Chapter 0678 meets from 5:30-7 p.m. Mondays at the Garner Senior Center, 205 E. Garner Road. The purpose of the group is to provide support, share information about healthy living and celebrate success with weight loss. Participants must pay $32 for yearly national dues and $3 monthly local dues.
Johnston County MS Support Group
The Johnston County MS Support Group meets at 11 a.m. the third Tuesday of the month at The Church at Clayton Crossings, 11407 U.S. 70 W Clayton. These free meetings are open to people with multiple sclerosis and their families.

Partnership for Children of Johnston County offers two programs for parents with young children.
Motheread is a 12-week self-paced program that combines teaching literacy skills with child development and family empowerment.
The Incredible Years parent program offers weekly group sessions for 14 to 16 weeks. Participants learn to promote children’s academic, social and emotional skills.
