I did a double dumb thing Monday. Maybe even triple stupid. I have always given blood any chance I get.
There was a blood mobile at the Harley-Davidson dealer in Raleigh. I did not put enough fluids in my body before or after giving, which resulted in a massive heat exhaustion attack while riding home. I got off the road as muscles in my back started to lock up, got stopped and off my bike in a parking lot in the shade.
My plan was to go into the Food Lion grocery store in Garner and get some water, but I was too late. My legs did not work! I got sick. I kept thinking this will only take a few more minutes to pass. After about 45 minutes of sitting in shade I wasn’t much better. Three young kids were cutting past the store. I ask them for help. I told them that I was not doing well and they went into action, I gave them money to go get me some water. They ran in and out. I got some water in my body and got sick again.
When you get sick you always feel better. Not so much, in this case. In talking together I learned two of the young men were 15 years old and only 10 days apart in their birthdays. The other was 13. These kids hung out with me for about an hour and a half. They went back into the grocery store and got some Gatorade. I shot the bull with three young kids as they kept their eyes on me.
I got better and thanked them for their help. The two older kids play cello and viola in school. The third one sings in choir. Things happen for a reason unknown to us. You see the world has good sports. We just do not hear about them.
I did not get their names but what these three did goes to show how much good there is. Thanks very much, men, for a job well done.
