Our entire region got some good news with last week’s announcement that Novo Nordisk plans a major expansion of its facility near Clayton.
The company will invest $1.85 billion in a new facility and more importantly, it expects to create nearly 700 new jobs.
The announcement is a boon for the entire county from the perspective of the county’s tax base. The new investment will add to the county’s tax revenue once all the incentives shake out and that will allow county leaders to provide more and better services for all Johnston County residents without having to raise taxes.
But the jobs remain the jewel in this economic development coup. Averaging $60,000 per new employee, salary levels will likely be high enough to support workers without making them rely on public assistance. And that benefits anyone within driving range of the new facility. That means people in the Cleveland community and in Garner will have some job options if they are needed.
We’d say that was a good day’s work for Johnston County’s economic development team.
