We learned a pretty powerful message about the value of social media last week.
On Monday, some cretin, with a woman and child in tow, walked into the Wake County SPCA office and walked out with a puppy. As if that wasn’t bad enough, it just so happened that the puppy had already been adopted and the new owner was due to pick the animal up later that day.
What ensued was a pretty lively social media campaign alerting people to the thievery and providing a description of the man believed to have taken the puppy.
The social media noise was so loud it caught the attention of more traditional media and quickly became a story everyone was talking about.
Whether he was racked by guilt, or whether someone else convinced him he was wrong, the man later returned to the SPCA, returned the puppy and raced off. It remains to be seen if he will be caught and arrested, but one thing’s for sure: The power of social media to bring attention and raise awareness of an issue is absolutely tremendous.
