The second annual Wake County Cup nearly had to change its whole format with an unforseen hiccup in its bracket-style plan.
On Monday night, Apex defeated Garner 1-0 in a game called for lightning in the 47th minute. At Sanderson, Heritage and Cardinal Gibbons also had their game called in the second half. However, they were tied 1-all.
By NCHSAA rules, that game goes down as a tie and there is no way to resume it.
For the Cup organizers, that left no clear way to determine which team was moving on to the semifinals.
The only option was to flip a coin.
Gibbons won the toss and is through to the semifinals. Heritage is in the consolation semis.
Tuesday’s first-round winners were Millbrook over Green Hope 4-3 and Sanderson over Raleigh Charter 4-2.
Consolation semis, Aug. 25 at Heritage: Garner vs. Raleigh Charter (5 p.m.); Heritage vs. Green Hope (7 p.m.)
Semifinals, Aug. 25 at Cardinal Gibbons: Apex vs. Sanderson (5 p.m.); Gibbons vs. Millbrook (7 p.m.)
7th- and 5th-place games, Sept. 18 at Heritage: time TBD
3rd- and 1st-place games, Sept. 19 at Cardinal Gibbons: time TBD
