Adult open gym
Adult open gym organized pick-up basketball games are played from 7-9 p.m. on Wednesdays at the Avery Street Recreation Center. Ages 18 and older can participate. The cost is $2-3. Registration is not required.
Preschool sports leagues
Preschool sports leagues for ages 4-5 are instruction-based and focus on teamwork and sportsmanship. All leagues will have five practices and three games on Saturday mornings at either 8:30 or 9:30 at the Avery Street Recreation Center. The cost is $35-46 per sport. Mini Heisman (football) is Sept. 13 until Oct. 25.
An assortment of junior tennis lessons for ages 8-17 will be held throughout the summer at the South Garner Tennis Courts. Most sessions run four weeks and feature hour-long instruction sessions. Fees range from $30-84 depending on the age group and level of play. Contact the Parks Dept. for specifics.
Adult beginner tennis lessons are set for Sept. 1-24 from 6-7 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays. The cost is $70-92.
Youth open gym at Avery Street Recreation Center
Youth open gym sessions for ages 6-17 will be held from 2-5 p.m. on Saturdays at the Avery Street Recreation Center until Sept. 27. There are games, activities and basketball available each week. There is no charge for the event. A special youth open gym session is planned for Sept. 1.
Preschool open gym
Preschool open gym for ages 2-5 at the Avery Street Recreation Center is designed for meeting friends and enjoying a morning of free play and some organized activities from 10-11 a.m. on Tuesdays. Sessions run until Sept. 23. The cost is $2-3; pre-registration is not required.
Preschool sports classes for ages 4-5 focusing on the fundamentals of basketball, T-ball, soccer, floor hockey and flag football will be held throughout the summer. Each sport runs for three weeks on Wednesdays from 6 until 6:45 p.m. The cost is $15-20 per sport. Visit the Garner Parks website for more information.
Wednesday Night Adult Open Gym
Open gym basketball for ages 18 and older is offered 7-9 p.m. Wednesdays at the Avery Street Recreation Center. The cost is $2-3.
Volunteer Youth Coaches
The Town of Garner is accepting applications for volunteer youth coaches. For more info, contact Jack Baldwin at 919-662-5051 or visit garnernc.gov for an application.
Fitness Classes and Activities
The Garner Parks Department offers a variety of fitness training classes including Zumba, belly dancing, dancing, step classes and more. For info, visit garnernc.gov or call the Parks Department.
Youth basketball registration
Registration for basketball with the Clayton Parks Notes for boys ages 7-17 and girls age 7-15 (as of Dec. 31) opens this month. Clayton town residents and family annual members can register now until Sept. 29; open registration starts Sept. 15. Practices begin in November and games start in December and run until early March. There are typically two games or practices a week. Info: 919-553-1550.
A Pilates class for ages 16 and up will be offered by the Clayton Parks and Recreation Dept. Pilates emphasizes the balanced development of the body through core strength, flexibility and awareness. The class runs for six weeks, starting in September on Thursdays from 8:45 until 9:45 p.m. The fee is $20-35.
Tae Kwon Do
This Tae Kwon Do program for ages 7 and up focuses on self-confidence, discipline, and physical fitness. The instructor, Joey Reeder, is an International Tae Kwon Do Federation certified black belt. Regulation uniforms are not mandatory. Testing to advance in belt rank is done for an additional fee. Classes start on the first Tuesday of each month and run from 6-8 p.m. Fees are $25-40.
Beginner tennis classes will be held at Clayton Community Park this month for ages 11 and up. Lessons for ages 11-15 will be from 6:30 until 7:25 p.m. on Tuesdays; lessons for ages 16 and up are from 7:30 until 8:25 p.m. The cost is $30-45.
Intermediate tennis lessons will also be offered at Clayton Community Park this month for ages 16 and older. Classes are on Thursday nights from 6:30 until 8 p.m. and cost $35-55.
The Clayton Parks Dept. is looking for volunteers. Opportunities include park beautification, special events and work in our community garden.
