Cleveland tops Smithfield-Selma, Triton
Four goals proved to be a winning formula for Cleveland’s boys soccer team last week. The Rams opened Two Rivers 3A Conference play with a 4-2 win over Smithfield-Selma on Monday and stopped Triton, 4-0, on Wednesday.
The wins bumped Cleveland’s overall record to 3-6 after an 0-6 start.
Smithfield-Selma bounced back and beat Western Harnett 9-0 on Wednesday night.
Triton takes over Two Rivers golf lead
Triton won its second consecutive Two Rivers 3A Conference girls golf match of the season at Carolina Lakes on Monday, grabbing the season lead from Corinth Holders.
The Hawks finished at 133 for the nine-hole match, 11 shots ahead of Corinth Holders. Individual season leader Peyton Labonte of Corinth Holders was the individual medalist with a 41. Lana Wang of Corinth Holders added a 48.
Smithfield-Selma took third on the day at 146, led by Parker Watson’s 43 and a 48 from Maggie Riley. Cleveland placed fourth (156). Kelsie Baker and Megan Long shot 51s for the Rams.
Rams take two volleyball wins
Cleveland outlasted Clayton in a five-set non-conference volleyball match on Monday, then rode that momentum to a sweep of Two Rivers 3A Conference rival Western Harnett on Tuesday.
The Rams (11-3 overall, 3-2 conference) beat Clayton 17-25, 25-10, 23-25, 25-16, 18-16 on Monday and were 25-19, 25-16, 25-22 winners over Western.
Clayton-West soccer rained out
Wednesday’s GNRC boys soccer match between Clayton and West Johnston was rained out. It has been rescheduled for Oct. 2.
Clayton played East Wake to a 2-2 tie on Monday.
