Garner boys tie scoring mark
Garner tied its school record for total points in a boys basketball game in its Nov. 24 109-93 victory over Cleveland. The Trojans won despite Cleveland making 13 three-point shots.
“Usually you don’t win if the other team makes that many threes,” said Garner coach Eddie Gray. “And you aren’t going to win many times if you give 93 points in 32 minutes.”
The Trojans’ win matched a 109-97 victory over Sanderson in 1991 when the Trojans’ leader was Donald Williams, who was later an NCAA Final Four MVP at the University of North Carolina.
Earlier in 1991, Williams and current N.C. Central coach LeVelle Moton had put on a show in Garner’s 108-106 victory over Enloe. Williams finished the game with 51 points. Moton had 30.
Williams is now a Garner assistant coach.

Corinth Holders had an easier time in the boys’ division with 154 points, 64 ahead of runner-up Western. South Johnston was fourth, Cleveland fifth and SSS sixth.
Cassidy McNierney won the girls long and high jumps for Cleveland. The Rams’ boys 3,200 relay team also won.
Trojans down West Johnston
Garner topped West Johnston last week in a Greater Neuse River 4A Conference wrestling match, 40-33. The Trojans won five of the seven weight classes from 106-145 to help build their lead.
Mathew Caltagirone, Bryan Roblero, Mason Crawford, Mathew Hicks and DeAnte Jones earned those wins for Garner. Matthew Orr and Antwain Mercurious also won bouts for the winners.
West’s Sam Campbell, Matthew Chandler, Tunstall Jefferson, Joseph Lama, Joseph Sewell and Nathan Vasquez were victorious in their matches.
