Garner golf team finishes fifth in regional
Eight area golfers are headed for the NCHSAA state championships Monday after solid finishes in their respective regional events.
Garner finished fifth in the 4A eastern regional at Wildwood Green in Raleigh. The Trojans finished at 267.
Garner’s Nichole Ceyrolles was eighth individually with an 83. Lauren Ceyrolles added an 84 for the Trojans, tying for 12th.
Never miss a local story.
West Johnston foreign exchange student Monika Vidlickova also qualified for the state finals with an 86, tying for 15th in the region. It took a score of 91 or better to advance to the state finals.
Garner’s Emily O’Neill, Taylor Whitley and Alexis Eaddy, West Johnston’s Preslee Honeycutt and Blair Koonce and the Clayton trio of Katherine Dull, Maryanna Byrd and Olivia Hall also played in the regional.
At the 3A regionals in Nashville, the area’s top golfers from the Two Rivers 3A Conference didn’t have the days they wanted on the course. But Smithfield-Selma sophomores Haley Talton and Parker Watson and Corinth Holders freshman Peyton Labonte all qualified for the 3A state championships.
Talton finished with a 94, while Watson and Labonte shot 99 and 103, respectively.
South Johnston was the highest-finishing local team. The Trojans were eighth at 345.
Sydney Wheeless shot 107 for South. Cleveland junior Tabitha Herzig finished at 108. Players shooting 104 or less made the state finals.
