Area high school gymnasts rolled up a dozen top five finishes in individual competition at the high school state championship meet Jan. 17 at the Raleigh School of Gymnastics.
Princeton’s Cierra Davis led the second session all-stars all around competition with a score of 38.35, while also winning the bars title (9.75). West Johnston’s Lauren Lushene finished second all around (38.25) and won beam (9.85), while Cleveland’s Ta’Nia Thompson finished third all around (38.2) and won vault (9.8).
Clayton’s Sloane Patterson finished third in bars and beam with scores of 9.6 and 9.75, respectively.
The Comets were fourth in the small teams competition with 109.95 points. Harnett Central won its fourth consecutive small school state title, scoring 112.85 points.
Garner’s Lauren Rogers won the floor title with a score of 9.8.
Thompson finished second on bars (9.65) and third on beam (9.35). Davis placed second in beam (9.65) and third in vault (9.4). Wilmington Hoggard’s Tara Schwagerl finished second in vault (9.45), and tied for third in floor with Franklin Academy’s Emerson Schulz (9.6). Schulz also finished third in bars (9.55), and Lushene placed second in floor (9.75).
Green Hope won its third straight large team state title. A pair of freshmen – Hayden Hughes of Green Hope (large teams) and Maria Esposto (large schools) – won the all-around state titles.
