West wins 20th, advances in soccer playoffs
West Johnston jumped out to a 3-0 lead and then held on through the second half for a 3-2 victory over Southern Alamance in the opening round of the 4A girls soccer playoffs Wednesday night.
The Wildcats (20-1-2) led 3-0 at the half and thrived on a balanced offensive attack. Robin Pollard, Madison Covey and Becky Meshaw all scored for the Wildcats. Kristin Power and Aliana Custer assisted on goals as well.
The win set up a second round match with co-Greater Neuse River 4A Conference champion Garner.

Johnson verbally commits to Clemson
Cleveland High’s Sterling Johnson, one of the top defensive line prospects in the country, verbally committed to Clemson on Tuesday night.
Johnson, 6-foot-5, 281 pounds, has offers from most SEC and ACC schools and is ranked among the top 10 defensive end prospects.
He tweeted Tuesday night, “I would to thank all the schools who have offered but, It’s official, I am verbally committed to Clemson university ! #Tigers”
Tennessee had been considered the leader for Johnson.
