N.C. Boater Education class
An N.C. Boater Education class for ages 12 and older, taught by N.C. Wildlife Enforcement Officers, covering boat operation, legal requirements and handling emergencies, will be held at the Avery Street Recreation Center July 21-22. Each class is from 6-9 p.m. The course certifies anyone age 14-16 to operate a personal watercraft in the state. Contact the N.C. Junior tennis camps
A junior tennis camp for ages 11-17 for all levels will be held July 28-31 at the South Garner Tennis Courts. The camp will consist of stroke drills, conditioning, game and match play. Camp is from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. daily and the fee is $125-140.
A camp for ages 6-10 will be held from 9-11 a.m. on July 28-31 as well. The cost is $90-115.
An assortment of junior tennis lessons for ages 8-17 will be held throughout the summer at the South Garner Tennis Courts. Most sessions run four weeks and feature hour-long instruction sessions. Fees range from $30-84 depending on the age group and level of play. Contact the Parks Dept. for specifics.
Adult beginner tennis lessons are set for May 5-28 and Sept. 1-24 from 6-7 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays. The costs is $70-92.
Parent and tot (ages 18 months to 3 years) is offered on Tuesdays from 9:30 until 10 a.m. at Artistic Gymnastics. Experience the joy of jumping, swimming and rolling using gymnastics equipment. Parent participation and supervision is required. The cost is $30-38. The next session is July 15-29.
Motor skills, coordination, strength and flexibility are developed for ages 3-5 using obstacle courses and gymnastics equipment at Artistic Gymnastics. Classes are available from 9:15 until 10 a.m. and 7:15 until 8 p.m. on Tuesdays, Aug. 5-19.
Recreational softball league
Fun, fellowship and equally competitive teams will be the cornerstone of this USSSA softball league. Games will be played Tuesdays and Thursdays at Creech Road School Park. Teams deemed too strong by the Parks Dept. may be asked to make roster changes. The fee is $450 per team with an additional $32 fee for non-residents of the Town of Garner. The league meeting is at 6:30 p.m., Monday, July 14, at the Avery Street Recreation Center.
Men’s 50-plus softball league
Ages 50 and over are the focus of this softball league for older but still competitive players. The fee is $450 per team with an additional $32 fee for non-residents of the Town of Garner. The league meeting is 7:30 p.m., Monday, July 14, at the Avery Street Recreation Center.
Adult open gym
Adult open gym organized pick up basketball games are played from 7-9 p.m. on Wednesdays at the Avery Street Recreation Center. Ages 18 and older can participate. The cost is $2-3. Registration is not required.
Youth open gym at Avery Street Recreation Center
Youth open gym sessions for ages 6-17 will be held from 2-5 p.m. on Saturdays at the Avery Street Recreation Center from now until May 24 and Aug. 16 until Sept. 27. There are games, activities and basketball available each week. There is no charge for the event. Special youth open gym sessions are planned for May 26 and Sept. 1.
Preschool open gym
Preschool open gym for ages 2-5 at the Avery Street Recreation Center is designed for meeting friends and enjoying a morning of free play and some organized activities from 10-11 a.m. on Tuesdays. Sessions run April 1 until June 3 and Aug. 26 until Sept. 23. The cost is $2-3; pre-registration is not required.
Preschool sports leagues
Preschool sports leagues for ages 4-5 are instruction-based and focus on teamwork and sportsmanship. All leagues will have five practices and three games on Saturday mornings at either 8:30 or 9:30 at the Avery Street Recreation Center. The cost is $35-46 per sport. Mini kickers runs May 3 until June 21. Mini sluggers is June 28 until Aug. 16 and mini Heisman (football) is Sept. 13 until Oct. 25.
Hunter safety course
A hunter safety course for ages 12 and older taught by N.C. Wildlife enforcement officers will be held Sept. 8-10 from 6-9 p.m. nightly at the Avery Street Recreation Center. All first-time N.C. hunting license buyers must complete a hunter education course before hunting in N.C. or purchasing a hunting license. Demonstration guns will be provided. (It is unlawful to bring privately-owned weapons into Town of Garner facilities.) Contact the N.C. Wildlife Commission (ncwildlife.org or 919-707-0010) for fees and more details.
Preschool sports classes for ages 4-5 focusing on the fundamentals of basketball, T-ball, soccer, floor hockey and flag football will be held throughout the summer. Each sport runs for three weeks with 45-minute sessions on Wednesdays from 6 until 6:45 p.m. The cost is $15-20 per sport. Visit the Garner Parks website for more specific information.
30-and-older basketball league
Individual players can join this recreational basketball league playing on weeknights (mainly Tuesday and Thursday) at the Avery Street Recreation Center. Players will be divided into teams on the night of the league meeting – Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m. Register online by Sept. 9 at 3 p.m. The fee is $68-90.
Wednesday Night Adult Open Gym
Open gym basketball for ages 18 and older is offered 7-9 p.m. Wednesdays at the Avery Street Recreation Center. The cost is $2-3.
Volunteer Youth Coaches

Fitness Classes and Activities
The Garner Parks Department offers a variety of fitness training classes including Zumba, belly dancing, dancing, step classes and more. For info, visit garnernc.gov or call the Parks Department.
Beginner tennis lessons will be offered at the Clayton Community Park through June 24 for ages 11 and up. Lessons for ages 11-15 will be held on Tuesdays from 6:30 until 7:25 p.m.; lessons for ages 16 and up are from 7:30 until 8:25./ The cost is $30-45.
Intermediate tennis lessons for ages 16 and up will be held on Thursdays in June from 6:30 until 8 p.m. at Clayton Community Park. The fee is $35-55.

Low impact aerobic classes for older active adults with added strength and stability exercises will be held on Fridays from June 6 until July 27. The hour-long class begins at 10:30 a.m. (No classes will be held June 27 or July 4). The fee is $20-35.
Line dancing classes
Line dancing classes for ages 18 and older will be held from June 21 until July 26 in Clayton. This beginners soul line dance course will teach all the basics of several popular line dances in a fun envoriment.
The weekly 55-minute classes are at 9:30 a.m. on Saturdays and the fee is $20-35.
Challenger Sports British Soccer Camp
A Challenger Sports British Soccer Camp will be held June 23-27 at East Clayton Community Park. Camp is offered in different sessions and age groups from ages 3-14. Half-day, full-day, 90-minute and 60-minute options are available. Fees range from $94-195. Each day includes individual foot skills, technical drills, tactical practices, small-sided games, coached scrimmages and a daily tournament.
The Challenger coaching staff provides players with lessons in respect, responsibility, integrity, sportsmanship and leadership.
Camp programs include a free ball and shirt and a free British Soccer jersey. For more info or to register, visit challengersports.com.
A Multi-sport camp featuring flag football, baseball/T-ball, basketball and soccer will be held for two sessions (July 14-18 and Aug. 18-22) at the Clayton Community Center. Camp runs from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. daily. This Sports Camp is for beginners, intermediate and slightly advanced athletes.
These five days of camp will teach and expose an aspiring athlete to fundamental knowledge of the area’s most popular sports. Also, the camp will teach cross training activities and personal fitness exercises to best prepare your athlete for their upcoming sports seasons. The early registration fee is $115 (three weeks before) or $150 thereafter.
