Clayton High School’s Nick Christiansen has been named the kicker for the East squad in the annual N.C. Coaches Association East-West All-Star Football Game to be played in July in Greensboro.
Christiansen is a signee with Miles College of Alabama and made eight field goals as a senior. He will join fellow Greater Neuse River 4A Conference standout David Onyiego (linebacker) of Southeast Raleigh on the East roster. The annual All-Star Game is set for July 23 at Jamieson Stadium on the campus of Grimsley High School.
North Johnston girls soccer standout Kaycie Evans has been selected to the East roster for the July 22 game at UNC Greensboro. Evans, who played a number of positions depending on the situation for the Panthers this past season, will serve as a midfielder. She was an all-conference selection in the Eastern Plains 2A Conference and helped the Panthers make the playoffs.
There will be an eight-region tournament for underclassmen held as well. No Johnston County players were selected for the Region III team.
PGA Junior League Golf teams are comprised of young golfers (boys and girls) with no prior playing experience required. The teams play 9-hole matches in a two-person scramble format.
The format of play reinforces the team aspect and limits the personal pressure that players often feel. Additionally, coaches can substitute players every three holes, so the entire team of golfers had the opportunity to participate.
Teams play regular-season matches before entering city and regional championships. Each regional champion advances to the PGA Junior League Golf Championship held Oct. 24-26 at TPC Sugarloaf in Duluth, Ga.
