The N.C. Athletic Trainers’ Association has named Mike Guerrero to its Hall of Fame. The Smithfield resident is the athletic trainer at Garner High.
Guerrero has been an athletic trainer for more than 25 years. He received his bachelor’s degree in physical education and health from East Carolina University and his master’s degree in education from N.C. State University, where he was a graduate assistant athletic trainer.
After his graduation, Guerrero returned to his alma mater, Garner High, where he has been a teacher and head athletic trainer for the past 23 years. Since 2002, he has been a clinical instructor for UN -Chapel Hill’s athletic-training program.
In addition, Guerrero has been athletic-training chairman for the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas since 2005. In that role, he is responsible for organizing the health care of Shrine Bowl players.
Within the N.C. Athletic Trainers’ Association, Guerrero is vendor chairman on the Finance Committee and registration chairman on the State Meeting Committee. From 1999 to 2002, he was the association’s state database chairman. He serves on the N.C. High School Athletic Association’s Sports Medicine Advisory Board.
The Athletic Trainers’ Association named Guerrero its Trainer of the Year in 2000 and 2006. He received the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Service Award in 2008.
