West Johnston High School grad and Garner resident Sarah Henry won two gold medals at the World University Games in Gqangju, South Korea this past week. Henry repeated as a world champ in the 800-meter freestyle relay and grabbed her first individual WUG gold medal in the 400 individual medley.
Henry, a former NCAA champion at Texas A&M, took control of the 400 IM during her freestyle leg, bettering Barbora Zavadova of the Czech Republic’s split in the stroke by more than a second. She won the race, held on July 4, in 4 minutes, 38.88 seonds. It was the USA’s first of many medals in the games.
Garner-Cleveland football game moved: This coming August’s Garner vs. Cleveland high school football game will be played on Thursday, Aug. 27, the two schools announced. The move was made so the game can be televised locally by Time Warner Cable. Last year’s clash was also played on a Thursday night, but that was mainly due to the Labor Day weekend that followed.
Golf camp set for River Ridge: River Ridge Golf Club will host a three-day golf camp for ages 7-17 from July 21-23. Camp for ages 7-9 is from 9:30 a.m. until noon daily and costs $60; camp for ages 10-17 is from 8 until 11:30 a.m. and the cost is $75. Kids should bring their own clubs if available. Annual Mudcats Baseball Clinic set: The Carolina Mudcats will hold their annual baseball clinic on Saturday, Aug. 8 at Five County Stadium at 9 a.m. The clinic will feature drills taught by the Mudcats players and coaches and is open to children ages five to 14 years old.
There will also be an autograph session at the end of the clinic that same day. The cost is $40 per child. Check-in for the camp will begin at 8:30 a.m. near the box office on the third base side of the stadium.
Participants are required to bring their own glove, bat and safety equipment normally worn in organized play. Water and snacks will be provided.

Tourney to benefit Cleveland athletics: The fifth annual Fore! Cleveland Golf Tournament will be held on Friday, July 24, at Reedy Creek Golf Course. The four-person superball event features a 1 p.m. shotgun start. The entry fee is $280 per team and includes all golf fees, prize eligibility, lunch and dinner. Hole sponsorships are also available. JUSA preseason soccer camp: Registration for the Middle School/High School Boys Preseason Camp is now open through Johnston United Soccer Association. The camp is from July 13-16 at the JUSA Fields off of Powhatan Road in Clayton. The four-day camp will help prepare players for their upcoming school team tryouts. Golf notables: Garner’s Pamela Bergquist teamed with Diane Thomas of Raleigh to win the women’s division of a GCA Four-Ball One-Day Tournament at Prestonwood on July 6. Benson’s Brandon and Megan Britt were fourth in the mixed division. Tracey King of Selma teamed with Jason Smith of Raleigh to finish tied for third in the Men’s A division. Noah Kallam of Clayton tied for 10th in the 15-16-year-old division at a Tarheel Youth Golf Association 36-hole tournament at Bradford Creek Golf Club in Greenville on July 3. Kallam finished at 153 for the event.
