Chelsea Arthurs will return to the ‘Biggest Loser’ stage this week to compete for a $100,000 prize, but she feels she’s already won a much bigger contest.
When the 29-year-old Raleigh resident signed up to compete on the reality television show, she had hoped to develop a new, healthy lifestyle.
And now, months after the show stopped taping, she’s been able to maintain the healthy eating habits and exercise routines she learned while competing.
During the show, Arthurs discovered she has a love for running and now regularly heads out to run with her dog at Lake Johnson. This spring, she will participate in her first half marathon during the city’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon alongside her best friend, who’s flying in for the occasion.
Never miss a local story.
She’s also had fun developing a food shopping routing and getting creative in the kitchen with new recipes. One of her favorites is a twist on pizza that features a portabello mushroom crust.
“I really hope that with my experience I can inspire other people and let them know they can do it too,” she said.
On the live finale that airs Tuesday, Arthurs will take part in a final weigh-in for those who were eliminated during the regular season. The winner will take home $100,000. Meanwhile, three finalists will compete for a $250,000 grand prize.
Arthurs was eliminated in the final regular episode of the season. By then, she had already dropped from 241 to 157 pounds. One of the highlights of the season for Arthurs was the makeover episode, when she could see herself in something other than gym clothes for the first time.
She also was thrilled to complete a sprint triathlon during the season.
“It was definitely a huge rush,” she said.
Arthurs said she also has seen the effect the show on those around her. Her boyfriend began his own weight loss efforts while she competed on the show and has his own goal weight for the finale. Her mother, who was looking to lose a few pounds, has committed to regular exercise.
For Arthurs, who had struggled with her weight since she was a young teenager, embracing a new lifestyle feels like she’s become the woman she always wanted to be.
“No matter the outcome of the finale, I feel like a winner,” she said.
