Plant sale, rain barrel fundraiser
The Millbrook High School FFA will hold a plant sale and rain barrel fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 13, at the school, 2201 Spring Forest Road, Raleigh. Proceeds will benefit the FFA club and the school’s horticulture department. The rain barrels, which are made from reused food-grade barrels, will cost $85.
Parent Academy class on bullying
A Parent Academy workshop on how to identify bullying and protect your child is set for 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, at Millbrook High School, 2201 Spring Forest Road, Raleigh. The free workshop will provide parents with information related to the definition of bullying, warning signs of bullying and strategies for bullying prevention. Registration is required. ‘Hairspray’ at Leesville Road High
Performances of the musical “Hairspray” will run at 7 p.m. April 18-20 at Leesville Road High School, 8409 Leesville Road, Raleigh. Teen Poetry Contest through libraries
Wake libraries’ annual Teen Poetry Contest will run through April 30. Students in grades 6-12 are invited to submit as many as three original poems. A winner will be chosen in each of four categories: sixth grade, seventh-eighth grade, ninth-10th grade, and 11th-12th grade. Short fiction scholarship contest
The Wade Edwards Short Fiction scholarship contest is open to high school juniors through May 1.
The annual competition, administered and supported by the N.C. English Teachers Association and the N.C. Department of Public Instruction, is sponsored by the Wade Edwards Foundation.
The three scholarships, along with a gift to the first-place winner’s English department, total $10,000. For the first time this year, each of the eight NCETA regions will select a winner to receive a $500 scholarship. The first five entries from each region will also receive a $50 gift card. Students from all schools – public, private, charter and home schools – are encouraged to submit their writing.

Scholarship for students with disabilities
Students can apply for Mayor’s Committee scholarships through May 31. The Raleigh Mayor’s Committee for Persons with Disabilities annually awards two $1,000 scholarships to students with disabilities.
Applicants must be residents of Raleigh and must be enrolled in or have been accepted to an accredited undergraduate post-secondary school, college, trade school or other institution of higher learning. The recipients will be chosen based on academic performance, financial need, character, school and community activities, honors or awards, and the ability to express themselves in an essay.
