Parent Academy class on special education
A Parent Academy workshop on special education is set for 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, at Millbrook High School, 2201 Spring Forest Road, Raleigh. Teacher leadership grants available
Wake Education Partnership will offer teacher leadership grants for the 2013-14 year. Grants are available in arts, dental health, early childhood literacy, exceptional children with autism, life science, math, nutrition health, the Dr. Sherri Merritt literacy scholarship and general. The grants award as much as $1,000 for an individual teacher application and $3,000 for a professional team. The application deadline is Friday, April 26. Teen Poetry Contest through libraries
Wake libraries’ annual Teen Poetry Contest will run through April 30. Students in grades 6-12 are invited to submit as many as three original poems. A winner will be chosen in each of four categories: sixth grade, seventh-eighth grade, ninth-10th grade, and 11th-12th grade. Short fiction scholarship contest
The Wade Edwards Short Fiction scholarship contest is open to high school juniors through May 1.
The annual competition, administered and supported by the N.C. English Teachers Association and the N.C. Department of Public Instruction, is sponsored by the Wade Edwards Foundation.
The three scholarships, along with a gift to the first-place winner’s English department, total $10,000. For the first time this year, each of the eight NCETA regions will select a winner to receive a $500 scholarship. The first five entries from each region will also receive a $50 gift card. Students from all schools – public, private, charter and home schools – are encouraged to submit their writing.

Carnival at Millbrook Elementary

Scholarship for students with disabilities
Students can apply for Mayor’s Committee scholarships through May 31. The Raleigh Mayor’s Committee for Persons with Disabilities annually awards two $1,000 scholarships to students with disabilities.
Applicants must be residents of Raleigh and must be enrolled in or have been accepted to an accredited undergraduate post-secondary school, college, trade school or other institution of higher learning. The recipients will be chosen based on academic performance, financial need, character, school and community activities, honors or awards, and the ability to express themselves in an essay.
