The movers at Two Men and A Truck have a special delivery planned for Mother’s Day this year.
For the past several months, the company’s local employees have collected toiletries, clothing and other donations as part of the nationwide “Movers for Mom” campaign.
And just in time for the holiday, they will bring what they’ve collected to InterAct, a nonprofit that supports survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault and rape.
InterAct last year served 34,000 individuals, including 8,200 who were directly affected by domestic and sexual violence.
Never miss a local story.
Christina Brewer, development and communications officer at Interact, said that survivors of abuse often arrive seeking help with little but the clothes on their backs.
Donations like the one from Two Men and A Truck ensure InterAct can help them rebuild their lives when they enter the organization’s programs.
The donations also help stock InterAct’s thrift stores, “Pass It On” and “Pass It On, Too,” where the entire community can shop.
Women in InterAct’s programs also have the chance to use gift certificates at the stores. For survivors of abuse who’ve had little control of their finances, the simple act of shopping can be a critical one, said Brewer.
A steady supply of donated items also makes sure InterAct has what it needs, depending on the weather or the make up of the families that arrive at their shelters, Brewer said.
“Our needs change day to day,” she said.
Patrick Worthy, assistant manager of the Raleigh Two Men and a Truck, said the company is expecting a record year for donations.
“The effort and the outpouring of love have been tremendous. It's a great, great way to honor mothers,” he said.
InterAct’s thrift stores are located at 1012 Oberlin Road in Raleigh and 309 S. Main Street in Fuquay-Varina.
InterAct also has three 24-hour crisis lines. The domestic violence line is 919-828-7740 or 866-291-0855, the sexual assault line is 919-828-3005 or 866-291-0853, and the solace center line is 919-828-3067 or 866-291-0854.
Donation boxes are set up at apartment complexes and schools throughout the city. Donations also can be made directly to the “Two Men and a Truck” store at 1001 Corporation Parkway, Ste.106. For more information, call 919-878-8833.
