Instead of the lyrics to worship songs, the two projector screens in Windborne United Methodist Church sanctuary will be showing ACC Tournament games on Friday, March 9. During the church’s Seventh Annual ACC Tournament BBQ, you can enjoy two North Carolina favorites in the same afternoon: basketball and barbecue.
Church members will stay up all night before the event to smoke 13 hogs. During the event, kids can play with toys or color in a children’s corner in the sanctuary while the adults watch the games on the big screen. Last year, the church served more than 1,200 plates of food and members hope to feed even more this year.
“It’s one of our most fun events because we get to reach out to the community and meet people we wouldn’t normally meet,” said member Darryl Colwell.
Proceeds will go toward mission work, including disaster relief, Operation Christmas Child and Wake Interfaith Hospitality Network.
Never miss a local story.
Barbecue will be available from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the church on the corner of Lead Mine and Six Forks Road at 9121 Six Forks Road, Raleigh. To-go plates are also available and lunchtime delivery is free for plates of 10 more within five miles of the church. “Within our church we have many N.C. State, Duke and UNC fans. Everyone wears their team colors to the event, but we all come together and fellowship throughout the day,” Colwell said.
