Broughton has been in the N.C. High School Athletic Association girls tennis 4A finals 15 times in the last 17 years, winning 10 state titles. The Caps are among the favorites to add another crown this season..
Broughton fell barely short in 2011, losing to Greensboro Grimsley 5-4 in the dual-team championship. The Caps had beaten Grimsley earlier in the year and finished 22-1.
Coach Laura Davidson’s club is stacked again this season with the return of five of her top seven players.
Junior Maggie Kane is a two-time 4A doubles finalist and state doubles champion in 2010. She is ranked No. 1 in girls 16s in North Carolina by the U.S. Tennis Association.
Junior Oliva King is ranked No. 16 in girls 16 and Kara Summerford is ranked No. 23 in girls 16. Kelsey Boole was an all-state pick in 2011. Senior Laura Robertson is back after missing most of last year with an injury.
“We graduated some great players,” Davidson said. “But we are very excited about the possibilities for the season.”
