Jordan Lappin has a couple of really good reasons to be fueled for a state championship this year.
Last year, the Cardinal Gibbons girls’ lacrosse team fell short to Morrisville’s Lake Norman in the N.C. High School Athletic Association title game.
The boys’ team won, however – and one of the members was Lappin’s brother, Chris.
“It really sucked losing last year,” said Jordan Lappin, last season’s leading scorer. “Our boys’ team won, and they won the last two years. We always see them winning and that really frustrates us, so it really motivates me.”
Never miss a local story.
The Cardinal Gibbons girls have started the season 15-0 with just two regular-season games left. The Crusaders played three games in a row starting April 11, and Lappin scored 13 goals during that stretch.
The junior All-American attacker said she’s just one of many scoring threats on this year’s balanced team.
“We’ve a lot of really good players this year,” Lappin said. “I like to dodge, so usually people on my team clear space through for me, and I dodge. We also have very good chemistry on our team and a lot of assisted goals. Usually it’s my players finding me, and I score.”
Lappin had a team-high 50 goals through the first 15 games. Gibbons’ goal-assist ratio was 2:1.
Gibbons has played several out-of-state teams, and Lappin said that will help prepare the Crusaders for the postseason.
“It’s a lot different competition,” she said. “The competition is a lot harder than it is here, so it tests us and makes us better players. We’re more prepared when we play people in North Carolina.”
Lappin started playing lacrosse in the first grade after her mother bought her and Chris sticks for Christmas. They started playing together in the backyard, and Lappin’s love for the sport grew.
She also played tennis but really enjoyed the team aspect of lacrosse.
“I just like the team,” Lappin said. “Most of the girls on the team are my best friends, so that’s really cool.”
She added she appreciates the support from the school. There was a mass of students who showed up for last year’s state championship game and other big matches this season.
“We have a lot of support from the administration, and there’s a lot of school spirit,” Lappin said. “That’s really fun.”
