Defending state champion Chapel Hill earned its fourth straight trip to the Eastern Regionals Tuesday night by blasting Corinth Holders 80-48 in the third round of the NCHSAA 3A girls basketball tournament.
No. 5 Corinth Holders (19-6) rallied to eat away at West Carteret’s lead, then overpowered the Patriots with impenetrable defense and offensive strikes to walk off their home court with a 49-37 victory.
Fortunately for the Pirates, three quarters of solid play and, more importantly, the 17-point cushion it provided entering the final quarter, was just enough to hold off a spirited late rally from the Gryphons as Corinth Holders survived for a 46-43 victory.
