An orthopedist who specializes in sports medicine has joined a practice in Clayton.
Dr. John Michael Arnold of Apex is seeing patients in the Johnston Professional Plaza on the campus of Johnston Medical Center in Clayton. He is in practice with Triangle Orthopaedic Associates.
Arnold received his medical degree from the St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies. He completed a residency in orthopedics at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond and a fellowship in sports medicine at the Hughston Clinic in Columbus, Ga.
He also holds a master’s degree in public health from the University of Florida in Gainesville.
Arnold, who was born in Arkansas, said he grew up taking apart household electronics, building computers and working on cars. “I’ve always tinkered with things to see how they work,” he said.
His parents encouraged him to pursue a career in health care. His mother was a nurse, and his father was a construction manager, whose job required the family to move to Georgia and Florida.
During his residency, Arnold was the associate team physician for three years for the St. Paul’s College football team, an NCAA Division II school in Lawrenceville, Va. That’s when he grew to love sports and chose orthopedic sports medicine as a specialty.
During his fellowship, he was the associate team physician for baseball, basketball and hockey teams at five NCAA Division II schools in Georgia.
“I like taking care of active people, from the elite athlete who is at his prime to the baby boomer who enjoys recreational sports,” Arnold said. “And I also care about those who may be struggling with arthritis. I want to help restore them so they can return to the activities they enjoy.”
Arnold thinks it’s important to fully explain diagnoses to patients. “I draw pictures; I pull up X-rays. I want patients to understand why it hurts and what they can do to make it stop hurting,” he said.
While he enjoys surgery, Arnold believes in other treatments too, such as injections, therapy and rehab.
