Falling tree kills machine operator in Johnston County accident

A Clayton man was killed Friday morning when a tree fell onto an excavator he was operating during a land-clearing operation near Clayton, according to the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office.

A worker was killed Friday morning when a tree fell onto an excavator he was operating during a land-clearing operation near Clayton, according to the Johnston County Sheriff's Office.

The incident was reported about 10 a.m., sheriff’s spokeswoman Tammy Amaon said. Phillip Stephen Olive, 43, of Clayton died at the scene off Buffalo Road, just north of N.C. 42, Amaon said.

Investigators have determined that the death was the result of an accident. Olive was clearing land when a tree fell on his machine, Amaon said.
