‘Porsche by Design’
The Fine Art Department at Johnston Community College invites Johnstonians to travel to Raleigh on Tuesday, Oct. 29 for an exhibit at the N.C. Museum of Art. “Porsche by Design” features 20 automobiles owned by Ralph Lauren, Steve McQueen, Janis Joplin and others.
The trip will depart JCC at 9 a.m. and return before 3 p.m. The transportation cost is $15 at the ticket booth and $16 online at www.johnstoncc.edu/performingarts. Exhibit admission, payable at the museum, is $18 for adults, $15 for military personnel and adults 55 and older, and $12 for ages 7-18.

Children’s art class
Children 18 months to 3 years can experiment with dough, pudding, gelatin, crayons and watercolors from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Fridays at the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center, 600 E. Booker Dairy Road, Smithfield. For residents, the cost is $5 per class or $19 for four classes. For nonresidents, the cost is $7 per class or $27 for four. A beginner crochet class will start Sept. 30 at The Clayton Center, 111 E. Second St., Clayton. The class will meet from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Mondays for six weeks. Mad About Ava Cocktail Party
“Mad About Ava,” a cocktail party, is scheduled from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, at the Ava Gardner Museum, 325 E. Market St., Smithfield. The event will kick off the museum’s annual Ava Gardner Festival, which will take place Oct. 4-6 in downtown Smithfield. The party, inspired by the hit TV show “Mad Men,” will include a 1960s costume contest, raffle drawings, specialty drinks, live entertainment and hors d’oeuvres. An art class for preschoolers will begin Oct. 2 at the Clayton Community Center, 715 Amelia Church Road, Clayton. The class will meet from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays for four weeks. Preschoolers will learn about shapes, primary colors and different types of media. The cost is $20 for residents and $35 for nonresidents. The fee covers one child and one adult. The Pretty in Pink Foundation is seeking artists for a show and sale in Clayton.
The entry fee is $30, and the deadline to enter is Oct. 2. The show and sale are scheduled from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at Deep River Brewing Co., 700 W. Main St., Clayton.
Ten percent of the sale will go to the Pretty in Pink Foundation, which will use the money to provide financial assistance to breast cancer patients in Johnston County. Works by Raleigh artist Elizabeth de Sherbinin are on display through Oct. 4 in the Frank Creech Art Gallery at Johnston Community College, 245 College Road, Smithfield. A reception for the artist is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19.
Two groups with Johnston County ties will perform at Wide Open Bluegrass in Raleigh.
Al Batten & The Bluegrass Reunion will perform from 1:45 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, on the Martin Street stage.
Samantha Casey & The Bluegrass Jam will perform from 1:45 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, also on the Martin Street stage.
Springhill Outfitters has scheduled its second annual Farm Fest for Saturday, Oct. 5, at The Farm, 215 Batten Road, Selma.
