Derward Green Jones, Sr., age 86, died early Monday, May 5, 2014 in Wilson Medical Center. Born November 17, 1927 in Johnston County he was a son of the late Manly Parson and Octavia Thorne Jones. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Orville Jones, Kenneth Jones, Eardith Jones, Frank Jones, and Nelson Jones; and sister, Joyce Davis. Derward grew up in Branch Chapel Free Will Baptist Church but later joined Pleasant Plain OFWB Church where he served as choir leader, Sunday School Superintendent, deacon, trustee, and was on numerous committees. Derward worked for the North Carolina Department of Transportation for 40 years. He was a Gideon, served on the Micro Elementary School Advisory Council in the 1970’s, and also proudly served his country in the Army for two years during the Korean Conflict. Derward loved feeding and caring for his four little dogs, eating Wendy’s chili, watching The Price is Right, and listening to Southern Gospel Music especially male quartets and watching the Gaither’s Gospel videos. He was a loving husband, Daddy, Papa, and friend.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, 2014 in the chapel of Parrish Funeral Home with Rev. Al Warrick and Rev. Billy Nowell officiating. Burial will follow in Micro Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home, and at other times at the home of Fonda Wheeler, 3831 US 301 N, Selma, NC 27576.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Peggy Batten Jones; son, D.G. Jones, Jr.; daughter, Fonda Jones Wheeler; granddaughter, Elizabeth Wheeler, all of Micro; brothers, Donald Jones and wife Joyce of Micro, and Dewey Jones and wife Linda of Selma; and sister, Laverne Davis of Elm City.
