Faye Woodall Wilson, 87, of Wilmington, NC, died peacefully on May 27, 2014 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Faye was born on June 27, 1926 to Garland and Minnie Thompson Woodall in Johnston County, NC.
“Mammy” as she was known by her grandchildren is survived by her husband of 67 years, Benoy Ruffin Wilson; a son, Michael Wilson of Wilmington; and two granddaughters, Shannon Wilson Zerniak and her husband, Walt, of Washington, NC, and Laura Wilson Schuppenhauer and her husband, Eric, of New Albany, OH; 5 great-grandchildren, Rob, Rebecca, and Ridge Zerniak, and Parker and Mary Elizabeth Schuppenhauer. Also surviving are two sisters, Iola Narron and Marie Bailey, both of Raleigh, NC; special extended family members, Patti Wilson McRae and Dave McRae of Greenville, NC; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her son, Richard Wilson; daughter-in-law, Mary Miller Wilson; and brothers and sisters: George Woodall, Elton Woodall, Beulah Gudac, Mildred Long, and Clara Scouten.
Not long after graduating from business college in Raleigh, Faye worked as a secretary at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. It was on her daily commute to work that she met the love of her life, Benoy. When her sons were young she volunteered as a Cub Scout leader and den mother. Faye worked at the S & H Green Stamp Store in Wilmington for 12 years eventually becoming store manager. She was a long time member of Cape Fear Presbyterian Church where she served as a Deacon, Treasurer of the Board of Deacons, and a Sunday School teacher. Everyone that knew Faye knew that she loved gardening. She was a charter member of the Pine Valley Garden Club. She shared her love of gardening with others by volunteering at the New Hanover County Arboretum for many years. Her love of animals led her to become a volunteer at the New Hanover Humane Society. Reading, sewing, cooking, genealogy, and studying history were her other passions.
A private burial will be held at Oleander Memorial Gardens. A memorial service will be held at 1 pm Saturday, May 31, 2014 at Cape Fear Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends following the service.
