Caroline O. Rechholtz died peacefully in her sleep at home. She was 78 years young and led a vigorous life. Her last evening was spent with family cheering on her beloved Carolina Tarheels.
Caroline was born in Chase City, VA and grew up in Smithfield, NC, one of three daughters of Virginia and James Monroe Osborne. She was preceded in death by her parents and older sister, Martha Osborne, and survived by younger sister, Ginger and husband Scott Ramsey of Chappaqua, NY.
Caroline graduated from UNC Chapel Hill, where she was a majorette and met her husband, Bob. They were happily married for 55 years and raised three daughters, Laurie of Bellingham, WA, Jennifer of Littleton, CO and Kristen of Chapel Hill. Six great joys of Caroline’s life were grandsons Mark, Robbie and Charlie Manta of Littleton, CO and William, Finley and James Commons of Chapel Hill, who adored their grandmother.
Caroline and Bob started life together in Cincinnati, Ohio where she taught first grade and Bob began his career. They settled back in North Carolina to raise a family. Subsequently, they lived in several states where she was active in Church and community affairs. Her appetite for adventure led her to work as an incentive travel consultant for the Carlson Corporation and travel the world. Caroline and Bob retired to their dream home in Chapel Hill before joining many old and new friends at the Cedars of Chapel Hill.
Never miss a local story.
Caroline’s favorite time was family summer vacations at Bald Head Island, NC where she was surrounded by her daughters, grandsons and son-in-laws, John Manta and Jonathan Commons and faithful dog, MacKenzie. Salt water was part of her DNA. We will miss Caroline’s infectious smile, enthusiasm and caring for all people.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 12, at the Church of the Holy Family at 200 Hayes Road in Chapel Hill 27517. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rector’s discretionary fund at Holy Family or The Autism Society of Northern Virginia at 2755 Hartland Road, Suite 200, Falls Church, VA 22043 in memory of Caroline Rechholtz.
