Notable: Sam’s senior season didn’t go the way he envisioned. He threw a curve ball in a March game and felt a pop in his elbow, then tingling in his fingers. He immediately thought about the dreaded Tommy John surgery (elbow ligament reconstruction) but played two more games before he got the final diagnosis. Surgery followed and he hopes to be back throwing by the end of the month, finally. … He was a four-year varsity standout for the Pirates and holds a place of lore in school history. He hit the first home run in the history of the new Corinth Holders High School, was a big part of the Pirates’ first playoff win and a standout pitcher. He throws a fastball, curveball and a changeup. … Sam is a rarity in the baseball world. He throws right-handed but writes left-handed. … He wants to improve his endurance and arm strength.
Corinth Holders coach Adam Weaver: “Sam works hard and has a strong arm. I feel like he’s going to come back stronger. If he takes the work ethic he showed here to college, he’s going to really have a chance to help Methodist.”
