Registration for youth basketball with the Smithfield Parks Dept. is now open. Leagues are offered for boys ages 5-18 and girls ages 5-12 (as of Dec. 31). The cost is $40-80. Practices begin in late November and games start in January.
Pickleball is offered on Fridays at the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatic Center from 2-4 p.m. on Fridays. Members of the SRAC play for free; others pay $2. The paddle, balls and net are provided. Info: Tiffany at 919-934-2148, ext. 112.

Railroad Days/Family Fun Walk 5K
The 2014 Selma Railroad Days Run and Family Fun Walk will be held at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4., in downtown Selma. The 5K race entry fee is $15-20 and includes a T-shirt and runners' bag while supplies last. Awards for the 5K are presented for overall and age group place winners. Selma Corn Hole by the Tracks
The Selma Corn Hole by the Tracks tournament will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4, in downtown Selma. The double-elimination, 24-team will require all participants to throw from the 30-foot line. The entry fee is $30 per team. The top two finishers will receive a T-shirt. Register by Sept. 29.
Youth basketball registration
Registration for basketball with the Clayton Parks Notes for boys ages 7-17 and girls age 7-15 (as of Dec. 31) is open until Sept. 29. Practices begin in November and games start in December and run until early March. There are typically two games or practices a week. Info: 919-553-1550.
Tae Kwon Do
This Tae Kwon Do program for ages 7 and up focuses on self-confidence, discipline, and physical fitness. The instructor, Joey Reeder, is an International Tae Kwon Do Federation certified black belt. Regulation uniforms are not mandatory. Testing to advance in belt rank is done for an additional fee. Classes start on the first Tuesday of each month and run from 6-8 p.m. Fees are $25-40.
The Clayton Parks Dept. is looking for volunteers. Opportunities include park beautification, special events and work in our community garden.
