Why Pitt? “I just liked the smaller school and I thought the coaching staff was great.”

Notable: Lane was the 2013 winner of the Sam Narron Baseball Award in Johnston County after leading South Johnston to the 3A playoffs. He went 7-5 with a 1.49 earned run average and one save for the Trojans. He struck out 67 batters on the season, while issuing just 11 walks. … He was named to the all-tournament team at the Johnston County Easter Invitational after pitching South to a win in the championship game. … Playing time early at Pitt was a factor in Lane’s decision to go to a two-year school to start his college career. “I definitely think my playing time will be a little more there, and hopefully get a shot at transferring to a four-year school.” … Lane lost his father, Ken, to a fatal heart attack during the summer of 2012. He credits his dad’s simple baseball lesson of “play hard, play smart” for his success. … Lane throws a fastball that’s been clocked at 89 mph, a changeup and a curveball.

South Johnston baseball coach Keith Durham: “He was one of the guys when he was out there, all of guys behind him (on the field) and in the dugout thought we were going to win. He had that calm confidence.”
