C.B. Aycock’s mascot may be the Golden Falcons, but it was Cole Sakowski who spent the night in the air Friday. Sakowski threw for 294 yards on 24-for-29 passing and four touchdowns to lead Corinth Holders to a 26-21 victory.
Sakowski threw two touchdown strikes to Hampton Smith, and one apiece to Dymon Walker and Tony Kirkwood.
Sakowski’s 294-yard performance negated Neil Clark’s 188-yard rushing effort for Aycock. Clark rushed for two touchdowns, with his second score drawing the Golden Falcons to within 26-21 with less than a minute remaining.
The two offenses combined for more than 700 yards with the Falcons rushing for 213 yards.
Never miss a local story.
Corinth Holders held a 13-7 lead after Sakowski’s touchdown pass to Kirkwood only to see Aycock barrel down the field late in the half to claim a 14-13 lead.
The Pirates (4-1) answered on a nine-play, 69-yard drive which culminated with Smith’s second touchdown catch, a 16-yarder.
Both teams botched opportunities in the second half as Corinth Holders struggled to close out its red-zone chances.
“I was proud of the way the team held up,” Corinth Holders coach Barry Honeycutt said. “We just need to work on our red-zone execution.”
However, the Pirates’ defense was up to the challenge, holding the Golden Falcons without points twice inside of the 30-yard line.
Clark’s late touchdown came after a Pirates’ turnover on downs inside the Aycock 10.
Kirkwood led Corinth Holders with 77 yards receiving, while Tori Carmichael added 75 and Smith 62.
