Parents: Travis and Karla Allen
High School: South Johnston
Travel Team: Johnston County Clippers
Positions: Middle infield, outfield
Why Mount Olive? “It’s a small school and they have a great softball program. When I went on my visit with the players and coaches they made me feel like I was already a part of the team.”
Also Considered: Campbell, Catawba
Major: Physical Therapy
Notable: Kayla has played all over the field for South: at second base, left field and center field. She plays mainly second base and the outfield in travel ball and projects to transfer that versatility in her second career as a Trojan (Mount Olive and South Johnston have the same mascots). “I like being a utility player,” she said. “I feel like it gives me the chance to contribute a lot, like I try to do at the plate with slap bunting and hitting for power as well.” She’s been a key part of the South lineup, hitting .482 as a junior and has helped the Trojans win 43 games over the past two seasons. Kayla does want to improve her strength and try to find some more speed before next season.
South softball coach Mickey Bridgers: “Kayla has excellent speed and is an outstanding defensive player. She’s a intelligent and disciplined hitter and a student of the game.”
