Spring baseball registration with the Smithfield Parks Department are now open for ages 7-14 (as of May 1, 2014). The fee is $35-70. Practices begin in March and games start in April. Registration has been extended until Feb. 28.

Registration for T-ball with the Smithfield Parks Department. opens Feb. 10 for ages 5-6 (as of May 1, 2014). The fee is $30-60 and practices begin in April. Registration closes March 7.
Lifeguard training classes
Registration for lifeguard training classes are now open for ages 15 and older. Participants must attend every class of the American Red Cross lifeguard training class. A $25 non-refundable fee is due at registration. Participants must pass a pre-course swim test that includes a 300-yard swim, treading water for two minutes and a brick retrieval swim, all under strict guidelines. Friday, Saturday and Sunday sessions set for March 7-9, April 4-6, April 25-27 and May 16-18. The cost for the course is $175-200.
Come and learn about pickeball, a cross between tennis and racquetball, at the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 20. Dress for athletic activity if you plan on attending. Call 919-934-1408 to register for this free workshop. Pickeball will be a part of the Johnston County Senior Games next year.
Fun and fellowship softball
Team registration for Fun and Fellowship Softball is open until March 7. Due to budget restraints and field availability, the Smithfield Parks Dept. can only accept the first 24 teams to register. To be registered, a team must turn in the team registration form and pay the fee. Spots cannot be held. The entry fees are $475 per team. A coach’s meeting will be held in March, with play beginning in April. Teams should expect to play two games per week on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and/or Fridays depending on field availability. Aquatics, fitness programs
The Smithfield Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of aquatics classes and fitness programs. Visit SRAConline.com or call 934-1408 for more information. Some of the fitness offerings include Cycling, Zumba, Hip Hop Hustle, Piyo, Turbo Kick, Total Body, Tai Chi, Inferno Cycle, P90X and Cycle Fusion. Young champions self-defense
A self-defense course for ages 4-18 will be offered by a certified black belt instructor from Young Champions of America Thursday nights at Harrison Gym in Selma now until June 12. The registration fee is $10 and a weekly class fee of $7. Register on-site at 5:45 p.m. for new students.
Free indoor winter walking
The Selma Parks Department offers free winter walking indoors at Harrison Gym Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 until 10:30 a.m. The gym is closed on all town holidays and walking ends March 14.
