Johnston County Hall of Fame Banquet
North Johnston’s Thomas R. Jackson III; Princeton’s Dr. Donnie R. Jones; Smithfield-Selma’s Mike Vinson and South Johnston’s Tol Avery will be inducted into the Johnston County Athletic Hall of Fame at 6:30 p.m on April 26 at Corinth Holders High. Tickets to the banquet are $10 each and available at any Johnston County high school.
Concussion testing in Smithfield
Baseline concussion testing for athletes will be offered this spring at Smithfield-Selma High and Neuse Charter School this spring. Advanced Physical Therapy of Smithfield will offer the test with no fee. All participating students must have a signed parental consent form to take the test. Garner High School Hall of Fame Banquet
The 2014 Garner High School Athletic Hall of Fame banquet will be held on Thursday, May 1, at 6 p.m. at Anfesa’s Grand Marquise Ballroom and tickets, which include dinner, are $50 with all proceeds benefitting the Garner Trojan Club. Tickets are available at the high school, the Garner Chamber of Commerce or from any Trojan Club board member. The 2014 class is former teacher/coach James R. Farris, football standout John Leach (Class of 1990) and standout athlete Raymond Lynn Miller (Class of 1973).
Summer Youth basketball program
The Johnston County Youth Development Basketball League will offer a summer program, partnering with Networks Basketball to provide sessions of basketball and life skill development for area children. The program will be held at locations in Clayton and Smithfield on June 23-24 and July 7-8 from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. There are 150 slots available for the program at a cost of $55 per player which includes all eight hours of instruction. There will also be an exhibition night of play on July 14 at the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center at 6:30 p.m. The JCYBL committee includes local experienced coaches and pastors. Area Shrine Bowl combine
South Johnston High School will host one of five area Shrine Bowl combines for rising seniors on April 26. Registration starts at 9:30 a.m., followed by drills beginning at 10 a.m. (kickers) and 11 a.m. (all other positions). Players will be measured and tested in the vertical jump, 40-yard dash, agility shuttle and bench press reps (185 pounds) and evaluated using position-specific drills. The clinics give players the chance to showcase their skills for potential scholarship offers and possible Shrine Bowl selection. The cost is $20 per player (cash only). Coaches and fans are admitted free of charge.
Trojan Club Superball Tournament
The Garner Trojan Club Hall of Fame Superball Golf Tournament will be played on Friday, May 2, at 1 p.m. at River Ridge Golf Course. The entry fee is $70 per person/$280 per team. Entry fees cover all golf fees, prize eligibility and door prizes. Hole sponsorships are available for $100 a hole. Johnston Horse Show Series for 2014
The Johnston County Horse Show Series dates for 2014 are set. These are open horse shows dedicated to offering a fun and exciting show that is open to all riding disciplines and equine breeds. Hunter Horse Shows for 2014
