Mom: Wanda Leach

High School: Smithfield-Selma

Height, Weight: 6-foot-5, 180 pounds

Also Considered: Georgia Perimeter College

Why Pitt CC? “It was closer to home and I didn’t want to go too far to play basketball. I can play here and be close to my family and church.”

Notable: “Tez” returned to star for the Smithfield-Selma basketball team, helping the Spartans make the playoffs, after battling through treatments for Hodgkin’s Disease throughout the spring, summer and fall of 2013. The treatments forced him to miss football season. But it’s now something that he looks at as behind him, a experience that’s helped him grow. “I don’t even think about it anymore,” he said of the cancer that zapped his strength and energy for so long last year. “I just learned so much about how to stay focused on a goal and remaining positive through anything.” … He’s hopeful to transfer to a four-year college after some time at Pitt and spending the whole summer getting stronger and sharpening his game even more. Tez was just getting used to the five inches he’d grown in about three years when the treatments took him away from the game. “I’ve got to find my shot,” he said when asked what he needs to improve in college. “I used to have it constantly, but I lost it during the growth spurt.” … The memories he will take away from Smithfield-Selma High will be many for Tez, “It’s been a really great experience,” he said. “There are so many people who were willing to help me and who I learned from during the past four years.”
