Area residents can now drop off unwanted or expired medication at the Fuquay-Varina Police Department at 114 North Main St.
The drop box, installed after the town received a grant from CVS, will be open 24 hours a day daily. All medications, including controlled substances, can be dropped off with no questions asked.
In a news release, the town said the drop box is intended to reduce teenage drug abuse and also ease the contamination of the local water supply caused by pills thrown in the trash or flushed in a toilet.
In 2011, more people overdosed on prescription drugs than on all other drugs combined, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Prescription overdose deaths were the leading cause of accidental deaths that year, killing more Americans than car accidents.
