A man escaped an apartment fire early Wednesday at the Hillcrest Apartments, but a woman was injured and rushed to WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh as firefighters kept the blaze from spreading, officials said.

The blaze was reported at 4:15 a.m. in one of the apartments at 126 Hillcrest Circle, town spokeswoman Susan Weis said.

A man was able to get out of the burning one-story building, but firefighters had to rescue the woman, Weis said.

Initial signs were that the fire began in a bedroom, but investigators were working to pin down the cause.
